Maison Martin Margiela RTW Spring/Summer 2014
You know what this dress made me think of? Natasha Rostova going to her very first ball... Only at present times rather than the 19th century Russia. The soft pink hue of the silk, the grosgrain ribbons and a touch of organza. Ah, just so beautiful! I need to read the War and Peace again.

By the way, a piece of trivia. Do you know that the translation of the title is, in fact, incorrect? The original title has a very deep philosophical meaning, so the Russian world "mir" later translated as "peace" should actually be "world", something that we are a part of, our community and environment, everything around us and not just the current state of affairs.  Somehow this moment of word-play ("mir" can be interpreted in two different ways) was lost in translation.

  1. It funny, I've written a post on Maison Martin Margiela FW 2014 details, which I haven't yet run. :) And thank you for the trivia, I didn't know that. That's why I think it's wonderful if you can read your favourite writers in their native language. When I think, for example, at one of my favourite Romanian writers, Mircea Eliade, and his novels, I don't even want to know how they sound translated in other languages. Some of the meaning of the words always gets lost in translation.

    1. I agree... I actually tried reading some of the Russian classics in English, but couldn't... I think the only book I can read this way is Lolita because the English version was written from scratch. :) And when it comes to foreign literature, I think we have been extremely lucky to have some Russian translators who were not only brilliant interpreters, but also fantastic writers and book authors, so they did their very best to preserve the stories. Still, part of the reason I learnt English was to be able to read the originals. :) I just wish I could speak French and Italian and and and... :)
