The espadrilles story & a pair for every budget

If there was a prize for being an iconic footwear, espadrilles would make the most likely candidate to be awarded. Can you imagine these casual braided jute-soled shoes have been around since 13th century? Born in the Pyrenees, the veterans of style quietly walked into our life and recently became a form of fashion obsession for many (I blame the highly coveted Chanel flats for that).

I first became aware of espadrilles after reading an interview with Manolo Blahnik who shared a memory of black wedges worn by his nanny. He talked about them with so much love, remembering every detail, the way the ribbons would be tied around the ankle and how the fabric felt to the touch. That story made me want them so much... I dreamed, and I searched, until one day I saw a pair that seemed perfect.

It came from Castaner - an iconic brand that was firmly put on a fashion scene in the 1970s by Yves Saint Laurent who was looking for a manufacturer of wedge espadrilles and, as the history shows, made the perfect choice - the Castaner shoes really are that good! Over the years I have bought a few to suit every occasion and am currently eyeing the classic black and white ribbon flats that I hope to make mine.

Soludos is another brand I adore because they have so many styles to play with and are very affordable, and, of course, I have to mention my good old friends Jeffrey Campbell and Kurt Geiger because both often come up with some fantastic ideas that I find incredibly sweet and tempting. In a perfect world I would also love a pair (or two) of the Valentino woven leather sandals, but for now they are strictly for the wish list.

And here are just some of my favourite picks for this season - whether it's a happy budget-frienly purchase or a real investment there's something equally beautiful for everyone. Just remember, as Diana Vreeland said once, "the proper Basque espadrille has a totally straight line {over the toe}, which is the whole chic."

  7. I have my own espadrilles story as, it seems, so many people do. When I was nine, my mum couldn't find a pair of summer sandals for me that I approved of - I always was a fussy fashionista - so she pulled a pair of her own vintage sandals out for me to wear; low wedge espadrilles from the 1970s. Forget the fact that I often wore them with t-shirts from the local Teddy Bears' picnic. I never felt more sophisticated then in those shoes and I, quite literally, wore them to death that summer. I have yet to find a pair that lived up to their glamour as I saw it, even from Chanel :)
