On haute couture & that famous quote

30/01/2015

Zuhair Murad Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2015
This season, more than ever, couture week made me think of hands, les petites mains, and beauty they create, stitch by stitch, hour by hour. A kind of beauty so ephemeral and fantastical that it may require time and a microscope to fully appreciate. I wondered about those hands, so ordinary in their anatomy and yet so extraordinary in the artistry.

I wandered among my thoughts led by the idea, the couture and the famous Dostoyevsky's "beauty will save the world" quote.

Then it struck me...

I've always believed that looking at something beautiful and absorbing the positive emotions it reflects can make one a better person. Today I've changed my mind. I realised that being an observer is not enough and what it really takes is our ability to use hands to bring beauty into existence and occupy not only our minds, but extremities, too.

It doesn't necessarily need to be couture... Write a poem, paint a picture, take a photo, grow a flower or bake a bunch of profiteroles - as long as the result makes this world a little bit more wonderful. And, maybe, just maybe, if more people use their hands to please the aesthetic senses and not to hit, slap, destroy or pull the trigger, the beauty will, in fact, safe the world... as utopian as it may sound.

And why not to use couture details as the starting point? Be inspired from the best to discover your own destiny...

  4. There is no existence with creation. If we don't make something - it doesn't have to be couture of course, it can be something as simple as a meal - we might as well not be here. Such a beautiful series of photos, Natalia!

  6. Dear Natalia, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! I agree totally, I think it is really necessary for a full life to do and create something with the one hands. For me this ways are cooking and also writing what both for me is a creative act. Thank you also for sharing this beautiful and artful fashion which makes me breathless.

  8. I agree, being an observer is not enough, one has to create, communicate and share. That's what it's all about.
