Will you?

Karen Elson in Tiffany & Co. Spring/Summer 2009 campaign
This morning I was awaken by the furry paws, scarce rays of spring sunlight and an emotional campaign by Tiffany & Co. shared on Facebook by Inna who starred in this short film. The story also featured other couples, straight and, for the first time in the brands history, gay, united by the one and only idea of love...

"Love that doesn't know any boundaries".

I cried (a little - and I challenge you to remain emotionless if you can because it's impossible), took my dog for a walk and wandered through the quiet streets covered in shy crocus blossoms and cheerful daffodils, thinking of love and what it really means...

... accepting the other person as he or she is...
... respecting opinions even if you don't always agree...
... forgiving mistakes because nobody's perfect...
... sharing that sunshine you carry in your heart with the world to make it a better place...
... not wasting time on hating others but spending it to love the ones you treasure...

I've also wondered about the early morning news that involved Domenico Dolce, Stefano Gabbana and Elton John, a story that began with an interview to Panorama and Domenico sharing his views on IVF and gay adoption saying that "... what I call children of chemistry don't convince me, synthetic children. Wombs for rent, sperm chosen from a catalogue. And then you have to explain to this child who is the mother. To procreate ought to be an act of love, today not even psychiatrists are ready to confront the effects of this experimentation... Life has a natural flow, there are things that should not be changed" and supported by Stefano who added that "the family is not a fad. In it there is a supernatural sense of belonging. A child needs a mother and a father. I could not imagine my childhood without my mother. I also believe that it is cruel to take a baby away from its mother."

The honesty backfired. On Sunday Elton John whose two children were conceived by in vitro fertilisation, called the duo "old fashioned" and instagrammed "How dare you refer to my beautiful children as "synthetic"? I shall never wear Dolce and Gabbana ever again", a furious message that was picked up by celebrities and turned in to the #BoycottDolceGabbana campaign.

I found this shocking, the amount of hate there was... Those IVF supporters, supposedly the good guys, blaming the designers for their old fashioned ideas and being short minded, were, in fact, describing themselves. Instead of exercising an opinion and simply not accepting it, they created a whole campaign threatening to burn the brand's clothes they owned and never buy anything from Dolce&Gabbana.

The thing is... Those two Italians aren't old fashioned... They are traditional. So traditional, in fact, that their opinion, their love for family and culture, the flow of life - are all build on century's worth of heritage, that incredible bond many Italians have with their families, the love for their mothers, the heart and soul of every household, the genetically perfected appreciation of beauty and a woman.

Being modern has nothing to do with breaking traditions as solid as these. Being modern means respecting other people's opinions and trying to understand them.

And this is why, once you peel of the unnecessary words, it's easy to see that Stefano and Dolce are not really talking about IVF or those babies, but rather pour out their hearts on the subject of love and what it means to them. Among all the glorified rubbish intensified by PR campaigns, this honesty is a much needed reality-check. It may not be pleasant for some, but it is what it is...

I believe in adoption. I believe that children deserve as much love as they can possibly get. And there are couples who have this love - straight or gay - it doesn't matter to me. Being a nutritionist and having dealt with the infertility issues (and getting naturally conceived babies as a result), I also know a lot about the side-effects of IFV on both the woman's body and the child - it is a documented fact that IVF-babies are born with higher risk of developing several forms of rare cancers, genetic disorders, birth defects and heart conditions later in life. This is also a result of being a part of the modern world, the world every every action and opinion comes with surprising consequences. Besides, I cannot even comprehend what goes through a woman's mind when she gives away her own new born knowing that she will never ever see this baby again.

It is a shame that Elton took the words so personally... Usually when people react to something with so much energy it means that those opinions are, in fact, true and resonate with the emotions and doubts hidden somewhere deep inside one's mind. And that is why it hurts.

I also wish he, and many other IVF supporters, adopted the babies who were already born and left out there, without mothers, without love, or hope... Because if you love, truly, absolutely, totally love, dream of having a child and can't physically have one, you give all that overwhelming love and a beautiful future to a little soul who needs it, here and now. Otherwise it's all about you and your ego - a selfish masquerade, and not an act of love.

So... will you...? Stop hating and start living and loving instead... Without boundaries. As nature intended.

  1. This is was I try constantly: stop hating and to love as much instead of this. Fortunately mostly it works and I know already by many experiences how happy this habit can make :) Thanks for the wonderful post, dear Natalia!

  3. Sooooooo glad you wrote this Natalia! I was wondering what the conflict was all about. It's so sad, because nowadays people take offense about everything! I believe in what D&G said! That also goes for the environment! People keep messing with it, and it's all messed up! There are some things you shouldn't "control". I think LIFE lately is NOT BALANCED! That's why you have all of these problems (diseases, environment, etc).

  4. There is so much that I could say about this - far more than I can possibly fit into this comment box. Children are not and have never been for me. But I cannot help but think of all the children who are already in the world, who need love and care and suffer from a lack of it, anytime anyone talks about IVF. I'm not against it - everyone is entitled to choose what they feel is best - but it saddens me that so many children still remain parentless when people choose to go this route instead of adopting. The very idea of boycotting Dolce and Gabbana for expressing their opinions on this subject is just disgraceful.

  5. beautiful pics. love the dolce & gabbana one!
