Apollonia van Ravenstein wearing Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche and Manolo Blahnik espadrilles photographed by Norman Parkinson in 1971 for Vogue Italia 1972 / via fashioned by love british fashion blog
The girl, Apollonia Van Ravenstein, in her gorgeous Manolos and Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche sitting pretty on a giant tortoise... That has been one of my 1970s fashion moments. Beautiful espadrilles, svelte figure clad in perfectly tailored little joys of fashion, the straw hat and stripped duffle bag... Not a fringe in sight.

Not that I dislike the hippy floral bohemian attitude - it's good, but not for me. A girl needs to be Loulou de la Falaise to pull it off impeccably. One of a kind. Otherwise it's a risk of looking like a homeless hippy or blending into the wallpaper background. Besides, a part of it is echoing the 60's...

My idea of the 1970s has always been about women who looked like women, even if they dressed like tomboys. Lacquered lips. Lauren Hutton. Celebration of style. Yves Saint Laurent gorgeous day jackets, Calvin Klein jeans, Giorgio Armani suited aesthetics and Ralph Laurent's designs for Diane Keaton in Annie Hall. My mum's wedding dress. The black and white. The blues and tans. The gorgeous reds. The suede. The wardrobe essentials. Statement bracelets. A few beautiful wearable things you'd throw together for that impeccable look that, sans the footwear, would survive the spin or two in a time machine.

And although I don't want to travel back into the 70's (frankly, I have no idea what it would be like anyway) or wear the look head to toe (huge faux pas, huge!), I do enjoy an occasional "the way we wore" moment. Here are just some of my most favourite visuals from the faded pages of Vogue to use as inspiration and bring the best of the 70s into spring/summer 2015.

I guess it's all about adding another touch of warm hue in a form of classic sunglasses and lipstick. As suggested by Vogue in 1974.

  5. I've always shied away from 70s styles because I find the overall look of the decade was so over the top - it can be fabulous on the right person but, especially thirty odd years later, far too much if not done exactly right. But in the past few years I've begun to embrace the idea of incorporating elements from that era into my wardrobe... It doesn't hurt that I have my mum's 70s closet to borrow from, either!
