When our skin glows, everything else in life seems a little more beautiful, too. I don't know about you, but I can deal with an occasional "I-have-nothing-to-wear" situation, "zipper syndrome" and even bad hair day - as long as my reflection in a mirror reveals a peachy and pimple free visage. That's the true confidence booster - wouldn't you agree?

Skin is incredible fascinating. It is the largest organ that lives and breathes, rejuvenates and dies, protects us from the harsh realities of the environment, maintain vitamin D levels, regulates our temperature and helps to eliminate toxins.

Skin is the first thing I notice when I meet people -  I am obsessed with naturally beautiful, make-up free skin, not necessarily perfect as such, but smooth and glowing, unique to the woman, her life experiences and diet.

True, good skin is also a matter of genes, but ultimately the secret of perfection still lies in our gut, so if you want to improve and maintain your looks - pick some of these wonderful foods and include them in your diet - then sit, relax and enjoy the view.

Eggs: skin is made of protein and eggs are one of the ideal sources of the cell building amino acids. They also feed the skin with keratin-maintaining retinol and provide plenty of zinc essential for cell growth, repair and reducing redness and inflammation. Always choose organic eggs.

Beauty tip: treat your skin to a fresh egg mask once or twice a week - separate egg white from egg yolk, then gently whisk the white into soft peaks, and yolks - until it looks creamy. Using your fingers, apply the whites on the t-zone and use the yolk over the rest of your face. Leave for 10-15 minutes, then remove with cool water. The mask will reduce the oiliness, deep-clean the pores and nourish the skin with lecithin and vitamins. For extra nourishment, add a little EV olive oil to the egg yolk. And if you have very oily t-zone, squeeze a few drops of fresh lemon juice into whites before applying them on the skin. This is one of those recipes women in my country swear by.

Avocado: my "beauty cream for the intestines", it is packed with vitamin E that protects the skin from free-radical damage, reduces inflammation and dryness, and encourages healing.

Beauty tip: try Antipodes Divine Avocado Organic Face Oil made with avocado and rosehip oils as well as acne-reducing ylang-ylang and Antipodes Avocado Nourishing Night Cream, the anti-aging and anti-inflammatory moisturiser.

Walnuts: unlike other nuts, walnuts contain both Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids that support skin integrity and reduce inflammation. Walnuts are also one of the most wonderful (and few) sources of antioxidants quinone juglone, marin and tellimagrandin that protect the skin from UV damage and reduce signs of aging.

Beauty tip: Korres Walnut & Coconut Clear Sunscreen is made with organic walnut and coconut oils that will nourish your skin whilst protecting it from UVB rays.

Pumpkin seeds may be small, but they are packed with zinc and vitamin E to give you a glowing blemish-free skin.

Beauty tip: I love Ambre Botanicals Raw Organic Pumpkin Seed Cream - it's so nourishing and a little goes a long way.

Coconut oil is a source of lauric acid that maintains balance of good bacteria in the gut and supports natural liver detoxification, thus improving the texture and look of your skin. It is also anti-inflammatory and moisturising as well as one of the natural SPF's.

Beauty tip: use RMS Beauty Raw Coconut Cream as a cleanser, moisturiser and balm - it's simple, pure and effective.

Sauerkraut or fermented cabbage is another fantastic way to maintain your gut health. Fermentation also increases bioavailability of vitamin C - one of the minerals essential for collagen production and reducing inflammation. Make sure to buy organic raw sauerkraut - or better still use my recipe and make it at home.

Beauty tip: I won't ask you to put the cabbage on your face, but instead suggest one of my favourite probiotic-containing beauty hero's - Ayurveda-inspired Aurelia Cell Revitalise Rose Mask made with friendly bacteria as well as nourishing Omegas and soothing rose oil.

Broccoli is a true super food for super skin. First of all, it is a source of cleansing fibre, plus vitamin C that reduces inflammation and supports elasticity together with carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, plus kaempferol that may improve your body's ability to deal with allergies.

Beauty tip: believe it or not, but Biotherm created a broccoli-based Skin Ergetic Serum that fights signs of fatigue and improves skin's radiance.

Tomatoes mean lycopene - the antioxidant known for it's ability to protect the skin from UV rays, prevent DNA damage and keep you wrinkle-free.

Beauty tip: trust Yes To Tomatoes Daily Cleanser to gently purify your skin, calm inflammation and reduce breakouts.

Cucumber may be a humble vegetable, but our skin loves its water and vitamin C content. Cucumbers are also one of the few natural sources of silica important for smooth and wrinkle-free skin as well as anti-inflammatory cucurbitiacins and cucumerin.

Beauty tip: take care of your delicate eye skin with Yes To Cucumbers Eye Gel and refresh with De Mamiel Facial Mist made with cucumber, linden blossom and neroli.

Watermelon is another beauty favourite of mine. First of all, it's hydrating. Secondly, the giant berry is also backed with beta-carotene, vitamin C, biotin and lycopene that protect and rejuvenate the skin. On top of that, citrulline in watermelon rind helps to fight free radicals and improves detoxification.

Beauty tip: Grown Alchemist Vanilla & Watermelon Lip Balm will give your the loveliest and softest lips

Oats are inexpensive, but effective way to nourish and sooth your skin from within thanks to vitamin E, silica, zinc and biotin.

Beauty tip: to soothe irritated skin, mix 1-2 tbsp of organic oats with enough warm water to create a paste, leave for 5-10 minutes, then gently apply on your face in circular motion - it cleanses and reduces inflammation and perfect if you are trying to recover from an allergic reaction and have to avoid commercial cleansers. For beauty in a jar, add Live Native Essential Earth Exfoliator to your regime - it's raw. pure and simply wonderful.

Buckwheat is so dear to my heart because this is one of the staples of Russian diet. In addition to its wonderful earthy flavour, the gluten-free grain (which is, in fact, a seed), is a source of rutin that, together with vitamin C, supports collagen production and improves skin elasticity. It is also a source of lignans essential for healthy digestion. Top top it all up, buckwheat supports blood sugar levels, which helps to reduce inflammation and keep acne at bay.

Beauty tip: buckwheat and borage oil Dr Hauschka Soothing Mask was created to balance and calm stressed and sensitive skin that needs extra attention.

Turmeric is that magic anti-inflammatory ingredient that can heal your skin in a matter of days.

Water - often forgotten, but absolutely vital for healthy, moisturised, glowing and younger looking skin, so drink up.

Beauty tip: freeze plain water or, even better, herbal infusions (chamomile, black tea, green tea, rosehip, mint or hibiscus) in ice trays and use them in the morning to freshen and plump your skin after cleansing and before applying moisturiser. It's such an amazing sensation! If your skin is very sensitive, wrap the ice-cube in muslin cloth first.
