Reflecting on Alexander Lewis Spring/Summer 2016

Alexander Lewis is charming. You just can't help but adore him. And this is all before we even get to speak fashion, the language Lewis is fluent in. But while it is possible to sing a similar dithyramb to a bunch of young and talented designers, Alexander really deserves a special one.

What sets him apart for me is the way this half-Brazilian-half-American Saville Row trained Londoner approaches design by following his own stories and imagination, not trends or rules of pleasing the crowd. Needless to say, his Spring/Summer 2016 was yet another proof of that.

Flavie Audi, a young French-Lebanese artist whose glass sculptures inspired Alexander Lewis's collections, names her clouds by numbers. If I am to follow the very same rule, Lewis' first ever presentation on the London Fashion Week schedule would be my Cloud 5 as the show took place on the fifth floor of a glass building filled with light, air and soft rainbow reflections bouncing off the transparent surfaces.

It felt like an modern gallery. The clothes took the central stage creating a magical chemistry between fashion and art, a moment in time when Alexander transformed Flavie's glass clouds in blue and silver hues into ice blue and navy sun dresses, organza skirts, trousers and leather jackets embellished with printed clouds, mirrored appliqu├ęs, clusters of Swarovski crystals and injections of vivid yellow trim that mimicked the light captured within Audi's cosmic designs.

It was a beautiful way for the Lewis to embrace the fashion week and give women a fresh-as-a-summer-morning collection to dream of, especially on a cloudy and rainy day. I can already see girls getting excited about the metallic blue biker jacket and midi skirt lavishly decorated with rainbows and mirrored cubes and the metallic blue biker jacket... While the dreamer in me has already given her heart to the little blue sweater, maxi ombre skirt and navy "celestial dress".

  4. These designs truly are something else - they are not pieces I would likely consider wearing and yet they absolutely capture my imagination and interest; I think that is a sign of truly good design... when we can see clothes that are not at all to our taste and still find them to be utterly beautiful, so much so that we might even be willing to change our minds about styles.
