I've come to realise that my best outfit ideas come from metaphors and memories, not a clothes rail, runway or street style snaps. Take this look, for example. It began with a dress... Just a glance was enough to take me back to Paris, to Saint Chapelle.

It was a beautiful autumn day when we visited the place. And before I even stepped inside the church, there was the sky... The vivid, endless, sparkling, azure dome above us. That colour, it was everything. The magic. The canvas for a simple but breathtaking sketch of the building itself - a stroke upon a stroke upon a stroke until they form a story.

Just like the dress did. It became the starting point, the wearable memories of the wrought-iron rooftops laced in sunlight and the dreamiest crystal-blue sky. The lattice booties inspired by the Saint Chapelle magnificent ceiling complimented it beautifully. As my mind drifted off, I thought of the river and the ripples of water teased by a delicate breeze... And chose the bag - and then the ring, to compliment the snakeskin pattern. Once everything felt right, I added the coat - a soft cocoon a girl could wrap around her delicate frame in a manner of a petal or let it fall and softly move and bounce as she walked...

And what about Saint Chapelle you may ask? No, I didn't forget about it... I gave my imaginary girl a flacon of Lutens' La Religieuse as a jasmine-scented hint, a secret message for those who know the story.

  2. I think our relationship with clothes is far more emotional and tied to memory than it will ever be about trends and the thrill of shopping. (Case in point - I am obsessed to the point of madness by the Chloe Drew bag, despite the fact that it is so far from my style, because I once saw a photo of my mum carrying a similar bag in the 70s. But that is another story entirely...) I love the inspiration behind this look as much as I love the look itself :)
